Everyone has a vision of Tahiti. For many that vision is a private overwater bungalow with a tropical breakfast delivered by canoe, and a glass coffee table illuminating the tropical fish below during the night. For some it might be shopping for pearls in Bora Bora, or scuba diving among Technicolor sea creatures in Rangiroa. For you it might be a simple as sailing a catamaran to a secluded snorkeling spot and a private beach. Whatever your vision, be assured the Islands of Tahiti dazzle with romance and unparallel scenery. With emerald peaks, see-through turquoise waters and the iconic overwater ungalows - Tahiti is all that and more.

In 1957 the area was officially renamed French Polynesia, which most people know as the Islands of Tahiti, and it continues to be a semi-autonomous part of France. The Society Islands of Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora, along with Huahine, Raiatea, and Taha’a, are the major visitor areas of the 118 islands and atolls of the Tahitian Islands. To the east 500 miles are the Tuamotus, and to the north of the Tuamotus and halfway to Hawaii are the Marquesas.

Here are a few things to know before you go:

The heavy travel season is June through September due to high demand. Tahiti has two distinct weather seasons. From November through April the climate is warmer and humid, with average temperatures of 85F. Most of the rain falls during this time. From May to October the climate is cooler and dry with daily temperatures of about 80F. The islands are aided by Pacific trade winds all the time. Water temperature averages 79 fahrenheit in the winter and 84 fahrenheit in the summer, with less than a degree of variation from the surface down to 150 feet.

No, you do not cross the International Date Line. You do cross the Equator, as these islands are located in the southern hemisphere and have reverse seasons of the U.S. The Tahitian Islands are 10 hours behind GMT. That is two hours behind U.S. Pacific Standard time (three hours behind during Daylight Savings Time). Flying time from Los Angeles is approximately 8 hours and 30 minutes; or approximately 5 hours from Hawaii.
