Road to Hana

Far from the other resort areas of Maui is one community that is so special, it has been called Maui County's "fourth island." This is Hana, a rural resort area on Maui's northeastern tip that is about as close to Old Hawaii as you can get on Maui. The people of Hana love old Hawaiian ways, the spirit of aloha, and the land on which they live. Green and voluptuously beautiful, Hana has changed little with the passing of time.

Getting to Hana is the real adventure. 52 Miles seems easy enough, right? Count them - 54 one-lane bridges, and a narrow road which winds around 600 curves. This is the famous, or infamous Road to Hana. There is nothing else like it and this is the only way to see the spectacular scenery which makes it all so worth while.

Jay in front of lava rock and some of the crashing waves

The scenery along the way: waterfalls splashing beside the road, plunge pools lipped with ferns, fruit trees growing wild, breathtaking coastal vistas, banks of ginger scenting the air, beaches with crashing waves, botanical gardens, bamboo forest, and a rain forest. In fact you will depart your resort area, drive through the eclectic, hip coastal town of Paia (where we suggest you gas up and grab some breakfast) and begin you accent through areas that will rain. Don't be alarmed - you didn't pick a bad day, it's just a rain forest. As you come out on the other end of the Hana Highway near Hana, almost miraculously the sun will return.

The twisting coastal road

Along the way Twin Falls will tempt hikers to discover her natural beauty first hand. A fruit stand at the trail's head squeezes juice from sugar cane stalks to sweeten their roadside beverages. There are other quaint, seclude towns worth exploration.

Jay at Hana Bay

Hana Bay has a great beach area. There is a General Store and a small convenience store in town for snacks and drinks. For many, Hotel Hana-Maui will be a resting stop for a night or nights. This is the ultimate resort to relax and rejuvenate in paradise. We always recommend Hotel Hana-Maui to our Maui bound honeymooners to conclude their Maui stay. It's the perfect setting before returning to you know what.

The road to Hana is narrow and winding, and characterized by countless beautiful views. But please keep in mind that it is also frequently used by commuters and other visitors. Here are a few tips to help everyone enjoy the experience safely.

Be considerate. Check your rear view mirror regularly. If you see cars behind you, find a safe place to pull over and let faster drivers pass you.

Don't stop on the roadway. As breathtaking as the scenery is, it is both illegal and dangerous to stop on the road to take photos or sightsee. Find a safe location to pull over before you get out to take pictures. There are plenty of safe stop in scenic locations.

Don't tail-gate. If you find yourself behind a slow-moving car, don't follow too closely. Give the driver in front of you ample time to find a safe spot to pull aside.

Be aware. Because many of the drivers are not familiar with Hana Highway, they may stop unnecessarily at yield signs or whenever an oncoming vehicle approaches. They may ride their brakes going downhill. For your own safety, be aware of what other drivers are doing.

Beautiful Twin Falls

When it comes to getting to Hana you have options. Having a rental car allows you to drive at your own pace, stopping when and where you want. There are also plenty of tours, including comfortable vans where drivers do the driving while you relax. Drivers know the history and all the main attractions as well as the hidden gems. Lastly, some folks elect to flightsee over the mountains to Hana and return by van to get the complete air and highway perspective. to each his/her own. If your schedule permits, by all means include the Road to Hana in your Maui plans.
