Maui Specialist

Both Jay and Justin are Maui Certified Destination Specialist. To meet the requirements for this accreditation a travel agent must travel to Maui and spend a week with staff of the Maui Visitors Bureau, thoroughly exploring the island and attractions first hand, inspecting hotels and condominiums, and spend several hours entrenched in classrooms learning the local customs, history, language and attractions vacationers would benefit from by visiting Maui.

This program is limited to usually one small group per year of travel agents recommended by a tour operator, such as Funjet Vacations in our respective cases. Not every participant passes the course to earn certification. The classroom portion is not easy and is taken seriously by the instructors. Graduates receive continual updates on Maui happenings, a plethora of vacation planning material for our clients, and benefits for our Maui bound clients exclusive to us.

Here is a sample of Jay's week in Maui.

DAY 1: Fly from the mainland and arrive approximately 5pm. Transfer to Westin Maui for check-in. Reception and dinner hosted by Maui Visitors Bureau, including Terryl Vencl, Executive Director. We were joined by representatives from the Molokai and Lanai Visitors Bureau, who work closely with the folks from Maui. The three islands belong to the same county.

DAY 2: Two morning workshops at the Westin, followed by a meeting with the Sales Staff of the Westin Maui. Tour of the Kapalua Resort, Napili & Kahana and the West Maui Airport. A wonderful lunch and a site inspection of the Ritz Carlton. Following lunch, a site inspection of the Kapalua Bay Hotel. From there it is off to Lahaina Town, a National Historic District. We visited the Lahaina Courthouse for a presentation from the Lahaina Town Action Committee. From there we enjoyed a Maui Mai Tai & Grog Reception at the Historic Pioneer Inn. We had dinner on our own at various restaurants. I dined at Kimo's, a very nice seafood restaurant on the harbor. We conclude our evening with the Maui Myth and Magic show, "Ulalena", a Cirque inspired historical account of early life on Maui. A very entertaining show that displays the pride and tradition of the native Maui residents. My advise is to buy a program and read it before the show begins so you will have a better understanding of the symbolism of the events.

DAY 3: We checked out of the Westin Maui bright and early, arriving at the Lahaina Harbor at 6am. We took the Maui Princess ferry to the Island of Molokai. After a continental breakfast we met Laurence Aki, a lifelong Molokai resident, who conducted our Molokai workshop. We inspected the Molokai Ranch Lodge before transferring to Kaluakoi Villa Resort for a site inspection and outdoor box lunch. After lunch we toured by vans the West End Condos, Mule Ride Stables, Kalaupapa Lookout, and spent some free time in Kaunakakai Town. We left town for check-in at the Beach Village at Molokai Ranch where we would spend the nights in Tentalows. We enjoyed an outstanding Wine reception of local wines and a very tasty dinner outdoors near the beach. We enjoyed a taste of local entertainment; guitars, hula dancing and more from Raymond Hiro and crew. I must say that a small group of us adjourned to the beach after dinner to gaze at the clearest, brightest sky I have ever witnessed. After all, you can't be much further from civilization and big city lights than on an isolated beach on Molokai, Hawaii, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Everyone needs to experience this at least once. The memory will stay with you - I promise.

DAY 4: Another early morning breakfast preceded our check-out and departure to the airport. Our flight brought us to the beautiful island of Lanai. We made a site inspection of the Lodge of Ko'ele followed by a surprisingly fun time at the Lanai Pine Sporting Clay and Archery. We marveled from some of the islands scenic lookouts before spending a bit of free time in Lanai City. Our home tonight will be the fabulous Manele Bay Hotel, which was about to become a Four Seasons property soon after out stay. This is the same resort Bill Gates rented out in entirety for his wedding. The dinner I had here was probably the most wonderful meal I have ever enjoyed - anywhere.

DAY 5: We spent the morning in a Lanai Destination workshop and taking tests. After lunch and hotel site inspection we transferred to the Lanai Harbor for a 45 minute ferry back to Maui. Our home for the next three nights is the Marriott Wailea. Shortly after check-in we walked next door for our dinner Luau at the Renaissance.

DAY 6: We munched on a continental breakfast before our morning long Maui workshop and test. We spent a wonderful and busy afternoon touring Maui. First we toured and had lunch at Maui Ocean Center; from there we drove to the intriguing 'Iao Valley; then Up Country to the Tedeschi Winery for a wine tasting, and to the amazing Alii Kula Lavender; and the South Maui areas of Kihei, Wailea, and Makena. After dinner at Roy's Restaurant, Kihei we turned in for the night as we have a very early morning and full day tomorrow.

DAY 7: At 6:30am we were out of the Marriott and off for the Road To Hana. We made a quick stop in Paia for a bountiful breakfast of freshly baked muffins and fresh juice. Then it was off for the completely amazing Road To Hana and the breathtaking scenery. I completely enjoyed the site inspection of Hotel Hana-Maui. What a wonderful location to get away from it all in relaxed luxury. Our final full evening in Maui was spent with a farewell dinner at the Marriott with the staffs of the Marriott and the Maui, Molokai and Lanai Visitors Bureau's. This is the occasion where everyone who passed the course received their Destination Certification Certificates. I proudly accepted mine from Tom Risko, Director of Sales and Chris Kaiaokamalie, who has become a friend and fantastic source for all things Maui.

DAY 8 & 9: Our departure day began very early, about an hour before sunrise. We watched the sunrise form the dock of Lahaina Harbor, where we waited to board our catamaran for the incredible adventure of snorkeling the renown Molokini Crater. We had a fantastic time snorkeling not only Molokini, but Turtle Town as well. We spent the late afternoon and early evening at leisure. I took the occasion to walk the Wailea beach to take in one last Maui sunset and visit some of the upscale hotels along the beach. I relaxed and dined at Tommy Bahamas Restaurant in the Shops of Wailea before checking out of the Marriott and taking my overnight flight with two changes of planes and some additional delays before arriving back at my office just before 5pm the following afternoon. That's a long day, night, and week.

RECAP: This was a special and comprehensive opportunity, one which I am grateful for. You can not possibly understand or comprehend the depth of opportunities on these three islands without experiencing it in this fashion. I have made so many useful contacts and have added many more that I use daily to enhance our clients experience in paradise. No client of ULTIMATE CRUISE & VACATION goes to Maui without being loaded with advance research material, maps, DVD's and guide books. Every return trip, every seminar we attend, and every contact we make in Maui adds to our experience and to your benefit. We know Maui and we love Maui!
